Seriously, the exposed midriff is a purely decorative costume element, like the high heel. It serves no functional purpose; in fact it's impractical in combat situations. It's only all the more obvious when the females are placed beside their more sensibly-clad male colleagues. So why so many midriffs among superheroines? Because it's fashionable in the real world? Because it's sexy? We're not saying that midriffs are inherently bad. But midriffs DO indicate the inherent difference in the way female and male superheroes are treated- even in so-called "wholesome" children's TV shows. What do midriffs say about the character?

The next time you design a superheroine with a naked belly, first ask yourself why.

MANSTREAM TAKES SOME PROZAC, NICENESS ENSUES

After so much negativity, Manstream thought it might be time to celebrate some of the positive aspects of MANSTREAM COMICS. Fortunately, a few previews have come down the blogosphere pike that provide a glimpse into what a happy, healthy mainstream comics industry would look like.

After DC's mishandling of the whole 'Lesbo Batwoman' character, it was nice to see Marvel tackle the lesbian superhero angle as well. No idea how Quasar's story will turn out, or whether she'll turn out to be just another 'WTF LESBIAN' casualty, but for now we'll just enjoy the sheer cuteness of her coupling with Moondragon:

Annihilation Conquest Prologue

Second up is Michael Turner's latest project, Kiani- a spinoff of his company's flagship book Fathom. Like almost every Michael Turner cover, this book features a scantily clad, well-buit female in scabrous armor. The difference is, this isn't drawn by Michael Turner. As a result, you have plausible anatomy, a powerful female looking out at the audience in a stance that's ready for action.

Contrast this with an actual Michael Turner-drawn cover, and you'll see what we mean:

The unnatural twist in the torso to show off her thong? The come-hither lookin in the face that says 'Check me out big boy' instead of 'I'm gonna beat the shit out of you if you dick with me, asshole'? The total reliance on his colorist to improve a rather static portrait?

Edit: Just for those not as well-versed as me in the comics, this is the cover to the fifth printing of the Marvel Zombies HC, released today by Marvel, art by Arthur Suydam. The argument here is that this book would justify children as sexual objects. The only people who the original poster might be speaking about are the ones who have already justified using children as sexual objects, hence why they are using them as sexual objects already. Do violent video games and violent movies objectify human life therefore justify murdering them? Only if you have already justified it to yourself.

So, in essence, you have just PROVED my original point. There is no proof to back up the original statement and the link you supplied doesn't do a very good job of supporting it either.

I respect the fact that people may be offended and/or may dislike the book due to fact that they can not agree with it's premise after taking a glance at the book THEMSELVES so that they are able to form their OWN educated opinions.

Though, I can not agree with people spurting off unfounded facts based on their own emotions and parading them around as true. If you're going to argue against something, get your facts straight FIRST.

Maybe all this bad press will reflect poorly on our more artistic endeavors like 'He Is My Master' (sarcasm ahoy!).

And that concludes the Nymphet bullshit, because you know what? You can download a scanlation but you ain't gonna be able to buy that book in a published English form. No one's gonna make meaningful money off of this comic- unless Simon Jones at the Icarus blog publishes it (he's offered to), in which case, watching him wriggle on the wrong end of a child-porn huntin' FBI sate' stick should be fun.

So Seven Seas cancels the book and eats a wad of cash. You can scanlate all you want and buy as many bootlegs of this crap as you can afford, but the Japanese licensors aren't gonna make money, the anime company that made the damn anime isn't gonna make money, and Seven Seas isn't gonna make money off of this book.

And in the end, isn't that what really matters?

Meanwhile, the Manstream Society has better things to beat off to than eight-year old manga girls. Thanks very much, boys and pervs!

First off, to give more context, if you’re not familiar with the behind-the-scenes process of licensing manga from Japan, it has reached a point of being so highly competitive among US publishers, that most of us, including Seven Seas, tend to place offers on titles while they’re still being serialized in the weekly magazines, often before they are ever collected into tankoubon (ie. graphic novels). If not, the license may very well get snatched up by the competition. In the case of NYMPHET, we placed an offer on it soon after the first volume of the tankoubon was released in Japan, with an option to license the rest of the series later on.

It was not until these past few days, actually, that I personally took the time to delve more closely into the rest of the series and the specific content of the subsequent volumes. Sure, I’d flipped through them before, and what I saw on a cursory glance seemed harmless enough. But this time I sat down and read the series carefully in Japanese, and what I found in volumes two and three were very disturbing. (Particularly, pages 129-131 in volume three, which are highly problematic.) (Someone, go look quick!) So much so, that I now have to retract some of what I said in my first letter where I tried to defend the content (see previous defense "if it's good enough for the Japanese, it's good enough for us"), because certain scenes in the subsequent volumes are indefensible and inappropriate, in my opinion. (If there is blame to be cast, I’ll accept blame on our license acquisition and evaluation process. If you were to add up the large number of licenses we acquire, and the total number of volumes per series, it would come to literally hundreds of volumes that we would need to read and review in order to stay on top of all the content and make sure that it is appropriate. In this case, NYMPHET fell through the cracks in our review process.)

So, my primary reason for canceling NYMPHET is due to my recent realization that later volumes in the series can not be considered appropriate for the US market by any reasonable standard (but that first one, in which Rin writes "I want you to come inside me' in calligraphy class is reasonable by um, a Jonet Benet standard?). For those of you who have been defending the title and have expressed anger about its cancellation (you're freaks), as a fan, I understand your frustration. But, at this point, I can only assume that you have not seen certain segments later in the series, just as I hadn’t, which very clearly cross the line, and which I can no longer stand by or support in good conscience.

Wait, wait...deAngelis retitles the book "Nymphet," he defends it with "if it's good enough for the Japanese it's good enough for us," and now he says, "I missed that a book about a child who writes 'I want you to come inside me' in calligraphy class in the first volume is probably not going to get better," and "Ooopsie, I forgot to review all volumes until a couple days ago."

For fuck's sake, he titled it NYMPHET. Did he think the book stopped being about loli-con and became about fairies or baby grasshoppers?
